I discovered that the animators behind Garden Party released another short film this year called Maestro. The film is short, less than two minutes, but it demonstrates the same insane level of realistic detail as Garden Party. In Maestro, an orchestra of woodland creatures come together to sing a literal opera, conducted by a very realistic and expressive squirrel. Seeing another film by the same group of filmmakers made me realize that their work is truly unique, not just for the level of realism, but also for its sense of humor. I would love to work on projects like this in my future career.
I also watched the Making Of video and saw that they partnered with a group at the University of Massachusetts called Digital Life to capture 3D reference images of the animals. I looked into this group and discovered that they have pioneered a new way of capturing 3D images and creating 3D models of animals. They work with lots of different clients and then they post whatever models they create to a Sketchfab page where anyone can download them for free.
