While exploring the Patterns of Chaos book, I came across a series of photos of clouds circling Mt. Hood. The book compares these cloud patterns to the strange attractor phenomenon in mathematics of certain particles being attracted to certain areas. I was intrigued by the visuals of this phenomenon as well as its name.

I found these Houdini simulations of different strange attractor equations.

The creator of these simulations linked to a series of works by a Swiss illustrator and CG artist. On his Behance page he showcases a series of Cinema 4D renderings of different strange attractors. The artist calls himself “Chaotic Atmospheres,” so I looked into his other work and discovered that his interests align very closely with the focus of this independent study. I am going to explore his work more and probably do another post on it.
