Looking forward to my Capstone for senior year, I am interested in doing some actual biological research and then experimenting with animation and visualization to communicate my scientific findings. I’ve noticed that there is a stark gap between the way that scientists usually communicate their findings and how the general public receives and processes information. I think this gap can be filled by a combination of science visualization and storytelling. For my Capstone, I am interested in using zebrafish embryos to study the effects of pollution on freshwater systems and then using After Effects and Houdini to explore different ways of communicating data. As of right now, my essential question is: How can storytelling, animations, and visualizations be used to effectively communicate scientific findings?
