One of the biggest impacts of this independent study has been my discovery that there is a field of education and work called scientific visualization. My interest in animation started in middle school, but I didn’t really understand all of the ways that you could use it, beyond just the typical animated films and cartoons. I tried several special effects camps at Lighthouse, in addition to a basic animation camp, but no one ever showed us any examples where animation was used for storytelling in science. Colleges are starting to have minors in science visualization, both in their animation departments and in their science programs. I started looking for examples of science visualization in the media and found an effective recent example in an article on Covid-19. I’m going to start collecting examples for research for my Capstone because I think that I want to do some science visualization as my focus.
