When I got home from MBL, I ordered several books by Ernst Haeckel: Art Forms in Nature and Art Forms from the Ocean. His work helped me see more beauty in marine forms, and the level of detail in his drawings is truly spectacular. It is interesting to consider his dedication to symmetry and imposing order on the natural world, when most of animation and visualization of nature today is focused on making things more chaotic. We now know that nature is both ordered and chaotic, and the challenge in replicating nature is finding the balance between the two. Balancing a desire for more beauty, while maintaining a realistic feel is a great challenge for animators. I am excited to see how his drawings influence my artistic work going forward.
